Hanover County Master Gardener Tree Stewards

Tree Stewards are certified advanced Master Gardeners whose goal is to educate the public about the importance of trees in our local community as well as their care and protection.  Our Hanover Tree Stewards are engaged in a wide range of activities, including creating tree walks for the public, helping the public select and site trees for optimal growth and health, and providing instructions on caring for trees in local landscapes.

Be Alert: The Spotted Lantern Fly is a Serious Threat

First detected in Virginia in 2018, the spotted lanternfly, originally from China, has rapidly spread across the Shenandoah Valley and parts of the Piedmont. This invasive species poses a significant threat to fruit crops, including grapes, peaches, and hops, as well as to various trees like pine, walnut, maple, and oak. Notably, its favored host is the tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), another invasive species.
