Japanese Zelkova

Zelkova serrata

Mature Size: medium to 80 ft. in height

The Japanese Zelkova is a large deciduous shade tree valued for its graceful vase-shaped form. Its leaves are medium green in summer and turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. This tree grows best in well-drained soils and is highly tolerant of urban conditions such as pollution and compacted soil. Small seeds produced in late summer provide food for birds.

Fun Facts:
• Native to Japan, Korea, and eastern China
• Often planted as a replacement for American elm due to its similar shape and strong resistance to disease
