Southern Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora

Mature Size: 60 to 80 feet in height, 2 to 4 feet in diameter

The Southern Magnolia is a large evergreen tree known for its broad, glossy dark green leaves and massive, fragrant white flowers that bloom in late spring and summer. This tree grows best in moist, well-drained soils. Its seeds, found in cone-like fruits, provide food for birds and small mammals.

Fun Facts:

  • This is a non-native tree to Virginia, but is native to other Southeast states
  • Flowers can grow up to 12 inches across and are strongly fragrant
