River Birch

Betula nigra

Mature Size:  40 to 70 feet in height, 1½ to 2½ feet in diameter

The River Birch is native to floodplains and riverbanks. This tree grows from 40 to 70 feet in height, and its growth rate is 1½ to 3 ft. per year. It is known for its peeling, cinnamon-colored bark, and tolerance of heat and wet soils.  It has a high production of seeds to feed birds and wildlife.

  • Most heat-tolerant of the birch species
  • Bark provides year-round interest
