Downy Serviceberry

Amelanchier arborea

Mature size: is considered a small tree or large shrub, typically 15 to 25 feet tall, sometimes reaching 40 feet

The Downy Serviceberry is an understory tree of upland forests, woodland edges, and slopes. Its leaves are alternate.  The young leaves are noticeably downy beneath, becoming smooth with age. Flowers are showy and white. Bark is smooth and gray with subtle vertical striping, becoming slightly furrowed with age.

Fun Facts:

  • Produces small, sweet, purple-black berries that are edible and enjoyed by birds and people
  • Displays excellent fall color, ranging from yellow to orange-red
