Ilex opaca
Mature Size: 15 to 50 feet in height, 1 to 2 feet in diameter
The American Holly is an evergreen tree with stiff, spiny leaves and bright red berries on female plants. It is one of the few native evergreen trees. This tree grows best in sandy, well-drained soils but may tolerate poorly drained soil. This tree’s firm red berries provide food for white-tailed deer and over 18 different bird species.
