Longleaf Pine

Pinus palustris

Mature Size:  80 to 100 feet in height and 2 to 2 ½ feet in diameter

The Longleaf Pine is a long-lived evergreen tree that grows in fields or sandy soils and is found throughout the Southeast coast of the United States. Needles are bright green, and 8 to 15 inches long with cones 6 to 19 inches long. The bark is a scaly orange to reddish brown.  Birds and small mammals eat the large seeds, and ants feed on germinating seeds.

Fun Facts: 

  • Longleaf pine straw is used for garden mulch and coiled basket making.
  • Old stumps are used as kindling for fireplaces.
