Eastern Redbud

Cercis canadensis

Mature size: 15 to 30 feet in height and 6 to 10 inches in diameter

The Eastern Redbud is a small deciduous ornamental tree that can tolerate full sun or part shade and moderately fertile clay or sandy soil. Regular watering and fertilization as needed will keep the plant healthy. It may be found as an understory in moist, well-drained woodlands. The Eastern Redbud is a flowering tree that blooms in the spring before leaves appear. Leaves are alternate, simple, heart-shaped, and smooth-edged. The young bark is smooth and brown, later ridged and furrowed to scaly. This tree attracts many pollinators, including butterflies and bees. In addition, its seeds provide food for wildlife.

Fun Facts: The wood is heavy, hard, not strong, and has a rich, deep brown color. Redbud bark was historically used to treat dysentery.
