Hanover Master Gardener vs.
HMG Association Member - What’s the difference?

Hanover Master Gardeners are volunteers who have completed the required Training Course by Virginia Cooperative Extension, which begins in January of each year, and are current with the hours required for certification. Hanover Intern Master Gardeners are required to volunteer 50 hours of service, 10 of which may be in support of the organization and the remainder by providing public education, upon completion of which they are certified as Master Gardeners. Hanover Master Gardeners are volunteers who maintain their status by completing, annually, 8 hours of Continuing Education and 20 hours of volunteer service in support of the organization or by providing public education.

Hanover Master Gardener Association Members have taken the Training Course and pay $10 dues to join the Association. Interns have the dues waived for the year in which they take the Training Course.

What benefit is there for joining the Hanover Master Gardener Association?

Members of the Association have a voice in determining the activities of the Association, can serve on the Board of Directors, and can hold elective office. The Association holds meetings that provide opportunities for Hanover Master Gardeners to fulfill the annual 8 hours of Continuing Education required for certification, determines the focus for the year’s programs (which include the outreach via Plant Clinics, demonstrations, Plant Sales, among others), coordinates the Help Desk staffing, recruits speakers for the Speakers Bureau (which provides speakers to groups throughout the County), awards horticulture education grants to Hanover Public Schools, and a host of other activities.

The Board of Directors oversees the budget, which allows for the purchase and maintenance of Association property; a shed for storing tables, canopies, and other Plant Clinic supplies; office supplies; office equipment, including computers, laptops, projectors; the hanovermastergardener.org website; and more. It also recruits and fills a number of other support positions; webmaster; newsletter editors; and numerous committee chairs. It is a hard-working group of volunteers, as are the many who support the Association in a myriad of ways.

The HMG Association invites and welcomes all Hanover Master Gardeners to join! The greatest benefit is in knowing you are supporting the organization that supports you as a Master Gardener.
